FAQs

Do I have to be a pet photographer to attend?

Photographers from all specialties are welcome.  Whether you specialize in pet photography or want to incorporate pets into your current business, you'll learn tips & tricks (and dos & donts) for working with animals and guiding owners.  Everything you learn about workflow, marketing, pricing, etc can be applied to any photography niche with a boutique business model.

What airport do I fly into?

Out of state photographers should fly into Portland International Airport (PDX) which is 30 miles from the Pondview Farmhouse in Cornelius, Oregon.  I am happy to share contact information with those of you who are interested in carpooling with fellow retreat photographers.

What day should I arrive and depart?

The optional Welcome Dinner on Thursday August 6th is at 6pm.  We would love to have you join us if you're getting to town the day before the retreat starts!  The retreat takes place Friday August 7th - Sunday August 9th from 9am - 5pm each day.  You can depart the evening of Sunday August 9th or the following morning Monday August 10th.  If you are flying out of Portland International Airport (PDX), plan 1-hour to drive the 30 miles from Cornelius, OR to PDX in case there is traffic.

Where is the best place to stay?

There are lots of Airbnb and hotel options in the Cornelius / Hillsboro area.  Once you reserve your spot in the retreat, I'll send over the exact address for the Pondview Farmhouse where the retreat is taking place.  There are two additional guest bedrooms in the Pondview Farmhouse (where Arica is staying) that are available to rent on a first-come-first-serve basis.

What should my skill level be?

To get the most out of our live shoots and working with strobe lights, you should be able to operate your camera on manual mode and be comfortable with adjusting your shutter speed, aperture and ISO.

Can you accommodate my dietary restrictions?

Absolutely!  The Welcome Dinner, optional Continental Breakfasts and Chef-Prepared Lunches will all be plant-based.  Dinners on Friday, Saturday & Sunday will be on your own.  Check out the sample menu below!  If you have any dietary restrictions or food allergies, let us know ahead of time and we'll be sure to accommodate your needs.

WHAT TO BRING

  • A positive attitude, good energy and good vibes!
  • Camera - with memory card and charged battery.
  • Short Lens & Long Lens.  I shoot with a 24-70mm & 70-200mm but any lenses with the ability to shoot in the 50mm range (for posed portraits) and 100mm range (for outdoor candid portraits) will work great.
  • Laptop optional for downloading model images and retouching.
  • Extension Cord & Power Strip optional - if you plan to use your laptop throughout the retreat.
  • I do all of my retouching in Photoshop CC.  The main tools I use are Clone, Patch, Marquee, Spot Healing Brush and Layer Masks.  An older version of Photoshop is fine as long as you have these tools and options.
  • I do all of my Ordering Sessions with ProSelect.  You can download a free 30 day trial at www.timeexposure.com.  I suggest waiting to download your 30 day free trial until right before the retreat.
  • A ukulele (or another instrument of your choice) if you have one!  We had fun at the 2019 retreat unwinding after class with a glass of wine, snacks and ukulele jam sessions (free mini beginner ukulele lessons included)!

All portrait sessions, "classroom" time, continental breakfasts, chef-prepared lunches, optional morning yoga / meditation and after-class unwinding time are taking place at the Pondview Farmhouse, a beautiful home on a 300-acre property in Cornelius, Oregon (just 15 miles from downtown Portland).  The home is surrounded by a tranquil 7-acre pond, walnut & hazelnut orchards and wide open farmland!  This retreat is your safe haven for relaxation, personal growth and building self-confidence as a photographer and business owner.  Before class each day, you'll have free time to paddle around the pond in a rowboat, hang out on the pier, journal, read, review your class notes or take a relaxing stroll through the orchards.

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

"I am so happy that I attended 2019 Arica's Pet Photography Retreat. It was truly fantastic, from start to finish!! The level of preparation and attention to detail was evident, from the communications, to the location (beautiful!), to the classroom teachings, to the numerous arranged portrait sessions and well scouted out locations, it was all done in a manner that allowed the attendees to have the best possible experience. Oh, and the food!! That is a whole other topic, all plant-based and every meal was de-li-cious!! As you can tell, I could go on!  Thank you Arica for such a wonderful retreat!!"   - Wendy Rountree Photography

"I attended Arica's Pet Photography Retreat and it was extremely well done. As she knows, I have attended several in the past two years from very established and well known pet photographers and hers lives up to their standards! Arica is very organized and has an entire plan laid out for you. I don't know if I enjoyed the classroom time or the shooting time more. The locations were so beautiful and we had beautiful dogs to photograph and really good people attended so the entire retreat was amazing!" - Linda's Pet Photo

"I was extremely fortunate to have been able to attend Arica's Pet Photography Retreat. Arica made sure that everyone had their questions and expectations met. We had fabulous food at a fabulous location with fabulous like-minded people.  I can honestly say that this event is what helped me take all of the knowledge I already had of photography and pull it together so it all makes sense. Arica made everything look easy. And having Gracie (Arica's fur-kid) to love on was icing on the cake!"  Lorraine Best

"Thank you so much for this wonderful retreat experience. From the moment I arrived to the moment I left, I felt welcomed and pampered. We learned so much in such a short space of time, but I feel like I can take what I learned and apply it to my business. In fact, I already have. This was an amazing, supportive experience in a beautiful location."  - Barb Thrall
